DNA analysis

DNA analysis

DNA analysis was developed in the 1980s and has become an important tool in criminal prosecution. Until 2000 DNA analysis conducted in Switzerland was only used in “direct comparison”. DNA traces secured on the crime scene would be compared with a sample taken from a suspect individual. In July 2000 a central DNA profile database, (CODIS  Combined DNA Index System) was established and on test run until December 31, 2004.

After approval by Parliament, the DNA Profiles Act and the corresponding implementing regulation became operative on January 1, 2005. CODIS was then set into routine operation.

CODIS stores DNA profiles of offenders, suspects, and crime scene traces. Automated comparison of the DNA profiles permits identification of crimes committed by serial and second offenders as well as organized criminal groups.

DNA analysis and identification has speeded up case solving, making it possible for several cases to be solved a day, be it by producing incriminating or exculpating evidence. CODIS is also of use in identifying unknown or missing individuals.
